Currently Chelmsford & District Auto Club has a committee of seven and we are all dedicated to off-road motorcycling in two main disciplines. At present we run motocross and trials and have organisers for each discipline who are responsible for the organisation of events as they are due. Of course, we also have the other usual posts to be found on committees of most organisations, i.e. Chairman/President, Secretary and Treasurer. We also have a Championship Recorder and a Membership Secretary.
So who is on the committee? Currently the committee comprises the following folk:

Albert is both our President and one our motocross organisers. He and his family have supported motocross for many years and are what can be described as real fans of the sport. They travel many miles each year to support motocross events wherever they may be run, including the British Championship – and it has been known for them to travel abroad to events but certainly to International rounds held in England. They frequently officiate at most Eastern Centre venues in one way or other, the start gate being their speciality. Albert is a licensed motocross Clerk of the Course and has been known to be Clerk of the Course for other clubs as well. He and his family are often called on by other clubs to help out at their event.
Jim Woodmason is the club’s Treasurer and one of our Vice Presidents. For many years he was also the Newsletter Editor. In the past he has been highly active in trials but due to poor health, albeit a little improved of late, has gradually reduced his involvement. Jim also officiates in other capacities as well. He was a fully licensed ACU Steward, and a Clerk of the Course for trials at Centre level until his recent resignation; he will, however, be retaining his National licences until they expire. Jim attended his first trial as an observer at the tender age of eight and is an Intermediate status trials rider although these days because of his health and advancing age, he rides the easy route and then only when he feels up to it. He is also particularly into the pre-65 trials movement in the Eastern Centre.

Tracey Woodmason was the club Secretary and Membership Secretary for many years until recently when she handed over as Secretary to Sue Thorpe – she is still the Membership Secretary. Tracey was first introduced to motorcycle sport, trials in particular, in 1989 at the Eastern Thumpers and has since been hooked in a big way. Although she started riding in trials, she has, almost from the start, concentrated on organising and until recently was regularly seen as Secretary of the Meeting for Chelmsford trials. At one time she would also have been seen laying out trials with her now husband, Jim Woodmason, and a few other volunteers from the club. From January 2002 until her resignation (in acrimonious circumstances) in April 2006, Tracey was the Eastern Centre Secretary. For twelve or so years, she was also a licensed Clerk of the Course for trials, enduro and motocross and also a fully licensed ACU Steward. However, as well as her position as Centre Secretary, these were relinquished in April 2006 due to lack of support from the Competitions Committee. She also resigned as distributor of the Eastern Centre Gazette which position she had held since January 1992. Tracey is particularly into the pre-65 trials scene in the Eastern Centre.

Geoff Brace is Albert’s son and first started the sport as a rider and remained so for many years. Since retiring from riding, he has continued his support of the sport and with his father Albert, Geoff is one of our motocross organisers and has been for many years. He follows his father, Albert, in being a very keen supporter of motocross and travels with the family to many different events across the country, assisting and officiating when called on to do so. Geoff is also an Eastern Centre and National Motocross Clerk of the Course and officiates whenever he can. Since 2005 he has been the track inspector for motocross tracks in the Eastern Centre having taken over from Andy Crawford at the beginning of 2005. In 2003, Geoff became a member of the Eastern Centre Competitions Committee and still serves on the committee. He is also the centre’s trainer for Motocross at Clerk of the Course and Stewards seminars.
Primarily a trials rider, Martyn is one of the longest serving members of Chelmsford & District Auto Club riding a Greeves when he first joined the club back in the mid-70s. In time, Martyn progressed to expert status riding a range of Montesas. He has ridden regularly in national trials throughout the country and when called upon to do so, has put his experience and ability to good use in laying out and organising trials. After a lengthy layoff, Martyn returned to the club in the mid-90s riding (at various times) a Gas Gas, a pre-65 Ariel and a BSA B40. A few years ago, he suffered a spate of broken legs which unfortunately put him out of action and curbed his activities somewhat and although he did start riding again, he has not done so for some time now. Currently he is the club’s Championship Recorder.
