Many of the older age group amongst the general public may have been to see a Speedway event - or at least heard of Speedway. Indeed, Sky currently televises a number of Speedway events throughout the summer months including the World Speedway Grand Prix events.
Grass Track has a very strong resemblance to Speedway as can be seen in both the track layout and the type of machine used. Events take place on fields which are laid out in the manner of an oval similar to Speedway but with somewhat more run-off space provided; races may consist of up to 12 solo riders or 6 sidecars.
Adult solo and sidecar, and solo youth classes are catered for within the Eastern Centre with youths generally being defined as being between 6 and 15 years of age. As with other disciplines, youth classes are available and are again defined according to age. Adult classes are generally defined by the engine capacity of machine although classes may also be available dependent on the type and age of machine, e.g. Two-Valve and Pre-75.
Grass Track events normally take place during the summer months since it is not generally considered to be a year long activity. However, due to the specialised nature of the discipline, there are unfortunately fewer riders than for other disciplines. For this reason, it should be appreciated that it may be necessary to travel some quite long distances to take advantage of a full season’s racing. This is because almost all events within the Eastern, South-Eastern, Southern and South-Midlands Centres are of Regional Restricted status to maximise the entries. This means that any riders belonging to clubs within any of the invited centres (generally adjoining) can also compete. This has come about in an attempt to drum up sufficient entries in each racing class for the meeting to be a viable proposition for the organising club.
